Now that Kazansky's has closed,

where do you go for blintzes in this town?

Yes, Kazansky's closed forever, as of 6 p.m. today, 5/31/10.
Note that the sign on the window (click to enlarge) makes reference to a 12-year lease running out, and therefore the closing.

Wait...forever? Why? Uh, I didn't hear about this.

Yep. It was just by chance my son and I went by there this afternoon and saw a sign on the window that they were closing forever, as of today. We were among their last customers.

I'm afraid so. I brought home a takeout menu as a souvenir. Today was their last stand.

Why didn't anybody say anything about this sooner? I would have gone and bought, like, 5,000 pickles and stored them somehow. Now where will I get my awesome pickles?!

Yeah, I know! I had a pastrami on rye with one of those pickles and my son had the blintzes that he's come to love so much. And I brought home two fried chicken breasts, not something you expect from a Jewish deli, but theirs are great.

That's very disappointing. Does anyone know why they closed?

I'm surprised that there wasn't an article about this in the newspaper. It was covered in the news when the theater, Panera, and Barnes & Noble left. Maybe there will be something tomorrow...

It caught me totally off guard, too. One of the owners happened to be there when I came in, and he was taking away a few of the bobblehead baseball players for his kids. He told me that they lost their lease, or at least that they couldn't continue to break even--something along those lines. He thinks that another similar restaurant will probably open up there, but so far there are no takers.

Thanks for the news. That's a damn shame about their lease.

Whoever runs the real estate along the Murray Ave. corridor needs to be fired. Over the last month alone, we lost the small salon, the Chinese massage place a few doors down from it, and now Kazansky's. We very nearly lost the Tea shop, too. Whatever they are charging for rent is obviously too high.

Not to mention the barbecue place a block or so down and earlier this year the Squirrel Hill Theater and Barnes & Noble, and Panera's, last year.

You're right. I noticed it recently. Isn't it an expansion into a sit-down restaurant from what had been a block or so away as a takeout place?

I am the owner of the building and I did everything I could to keep the deli open. Paul, the owner/manager and I had a very good relationship all along and have parted friends. They just didn't do enough business to meet their overhead.

NO!

I personally don't care for blintzes, but my guess is that you could probably either get them at the Bagel Factory or at the Pittsburgh Deli Co.

One would be very unlikely to get blintzes at either location. Neither being really focused on the deli/kosher experience. The Smallman Street Deli does have cheese blintzes (sad to only have one type available) so that may work for the OP.

Thanks for reminding me about Smallman St. Deli. I'll give them a try. It's actually my teenage son who's the big fan of the blintzes, while I was more a fan of their sandwiches and soups.

I wasn't feeling well today, and thought about going to get some of their amazing matzo ball soup. We always go there for their soup when we don't feel well!

I cannot imagine having a cold and NOT having a container of Kazanski's (I have to admit we still call it Rhoda's) matzoh ball soup in the freezer! It's the ultimate get well gift that we give to ourselves and our kids - and since we moved from the area, we would still drive there for it - from Shaler to lay in a supply for the winter.
This is such a bad thing!

I know it's not the same thing but its super easy to make matzoh ball soup. I mean, it's really really easy. The big thing is the broth but even that isn't as hard as people make it out to be. Personally, I use duck stock but that's mostly because duck is amazing. Either way, if you can mix some ingredients and boil water you can make matzoh ball soup as good or better than what you were getting at Kazansky's.

this. Just make chicken soup as usual (keep bits of chicken--you want more than just broth), add veggies, etc, and make matzah balls per directions out of a box.

It's no fun to make this yourself while you're sick, but that's what spouses/partners/friends are for. :)

No! I love their Rachel sandwich and matzo ball soup. :-(

Seriously, Equity has gotten really fucking greedy with the rent. Once Sq Hill becomes a ghost town maybe they'll learn their lesson?

I grew up with that place as Iz Cohen's first then Rhoda's.

It changed over to Kazansky's and, although the food was different and I rarely visited, it was sort of comforting to know the space was still in the hands of someone determined to keep it a neighborhood deli.

Very sad to hear that even this place is now gone.

That's not true. I had some terrific meals over the past few years. It was not dirty. They closed because their twelve-year lease had ended and the owners decided business was not sufficient to warrant the fairly high rent on that space.

Well, if it's a really good Indian place I won't complain that much. I'd like to see another deli, but it doesn't have to be right in that spot. Has the old Barnes & Noble site been filled?
